The remote site of Kinuachdrachd at the northern end of Jura provides a remarkable location for a fully off-grid family home and two cabins. Retaining a sense of the sites agricultural heritage, walls of the existing dilapidated stone barn are retained and a new corrugated steel clad house nestles into the ruin. Raw materials with exposed beams and columns are expressed internally creating a rich and warm space and a glazed living area and kitchen provides expansive views across the Sound of Jura. Detailed discussions with our clients on their imagined day to day use of the house helped form the brief and aided us in our approach to the renewables strategy for the project in collaboration with the services and energy engineers.
